Fort Washington is a U.S. Census Designated Place (CDP) in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Fort Washington owes its name for the defensive fortifications built to protect Washington, DC from invading forces. The U.S. Census Bureau reported a population of 23,717 in the 2010 census. Fort Washington is located on the Potomac River, just south of National Harbor, Maryland, and Washington, DC. Oxon Hill, Friendly, Clinton, and Accokeek are also areas of Maryland adjacent to Fort Washington.
Located only 30 minutes (without traffic) from the National Mall in Washington DC and very close to the Beltway, Fort Washington is a popular area to live in the greater DC metro area.
Fort Washington is immediately south the popular mixed-use area of National Harbor, which hosts a Gaylord hotel and an MGM Hotel and Casino. The area also hosts a Tangiers outlet mall. For Washington Park, Piscataway Stream Valley Park, Tantallon Park, Franklin Square Park, Harmony Hall Park, Fort Foote Park, Riverview Recreation Center, and Betty Blume Park all fall within the area.
